The Pakistani authority in Nepal have handed over a compensation of Rs 1 million to the family of Sona Sherpa, who was killed in a militant attack at the base camp of Nanga Parbat, Pakistan on June 22, 2013.

The Charge de’ Affaires of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Nepal, Nazur Hussein handed over the cheque to Sona’s widowed wife Doma on Monday, amid an event at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singhadurbar.

Under Secretary at the South Asia Division of the Ministry Sushil K Lamsal thanked the Embassy of Pakistan for its “generous gesture of providing financial support to the bereaved family”.

Sona was a victim of the mass murder at the base camp of the Nanga Parbat (8126 metres), world’s ninth highest peak, located in the Gilgit – Baltistan region of Pakistan.

Sona (36), was one among the 11 persons who were killed in the attack. Other victims were from from Ukraine, China, Russia and Pakistan.

Sona Sherpa was born in Solukhumbu on November 26, 1977. Lately, before being caught in the attack, he had successfully climbed Mt Everest during its diamond jubilee celebration and had left for Nanga Parbat expedition on June 11, 2013.
