KATHMANDU: A Malaysian immigration official informed that as many as 53 Nepali migrant workers were arrested from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Monday.
According to Deputy Director at the Enforcement Division of the Department of Immigration M. Saravana Kumar, the ones arrested today had overstayed in Malaysia and were trying to leave the country using documents and passes, believed to be false.
“All of them have been detained for investigation,” he told THT Online.
Only after investigation, he added, it could be decided whether the Nepali workers would face imprisonment or penalty for their offence.
As many as 93 Nepali passengers, out of 194 who had bought tickets to Kathmandu from Kuala Lumpur, had not boarded the Nepal Airlines plane earlier today.
According to an official at the Nepali Embassy in Malaysia, the Embassy has received unconfirmed reports that some Nepalis were arrested while around 40 others managed to escape the arrest at the airport.
